I love cookouts and parties and kicking-off summer, but Memorial Day also reminds me of a time I interviewed Veterans for a Memorial Day story I was writing. Right out of college, I worked as a journalist for my hometown newspaper and I was pegged to write the obligatory Memorial Day piece - what are people doing? how are they celebrating? Cookouts? Picnics? Traveling? etc. I thought it was interesting (and sad) that no one really talked about Veterans. this was back in the mid-90s. I have no idea if that has anything to do with it or not. I'm sure people somewhere were remembering Veterans, but they just weren't the people I was interviewing. So, I found some local Veterans to interview and they said it wasn't surprising. They were used to it. That was almost 20 years ago and that story still stays with me. I know these printables aren't much, but at least I can use these to tell and show Macy that Memorial Day isn't just about a long weekend or cookouts or having friends over. Those things are wonderful, but we get to celebrate today because brave, caring people sacrifced so much.
If you are hosting or going to a party, showing your support for Veterans can be super easy. I just pick-up some ready to go cookies and stuck-in these toppers . . .
