Over the past week, I've been sharing details from our recent Back To School party - check-out "Host a Back To School Party" and "Back To School Cookout printables"
Today, I'm featuring free printables and a tutorial for creating your own mini-flag pens, as well as the festive pennant banner. You can get the printable templates here Download DIY Pennant Banner Template_Flairy Tales
Here's what you'll need for the mini-flag pens:
1. Pens (I used Bic because they are cheap and remind me of my own school days!).
2. Scrapbook paper (or any kind of paper) in a variety of colors and patterns. I prefer to use a heavy weight of paper, but you don't have to. For the Back to School banner, I actually had a mix of different paper weights.
3. Glue (or any kind of adhesive you'd like to use.
4. Scissors
Here's how to put it all together:
1. Print the flag template onto heavy card-stock (for tracing) . . .
2. Use the template to trace the flag shape onto your scrapbook paper
3. Cut out the flag and fold the end (about an inch) around the pen and glue to the back of the flag.
Here's a pic showing the back of the pen . . .
And that's it! You've got yourself a batch of super-cute (& super cheap) party favors . . .
Okay - now it's time for the pennant banner. I usually make a banner for most of my parties because it adds lots of pow and cost less than $5 to make. Plus - you can customize with whatever colors or patterns you want. Another bonus is that with the way I make pennant banners, you can easily remove the individual flags and store flat in a drawer or storage area - no tangled strings!!!
Here's what you'll need:
1. Scrapbook paper in a variety of colors and patterns
2. String or ribbon
3. Pencil and scissors
Here's how to put it all together:
1. Print the Flairy Tales free pennant banner template onto heavy card stock (for tracing) . . .
2. Cut out your template and trace the "diamond-shape" pennant onto your scrapbook paper. Be sure to trace the whole shape, including the dotted line portion (the dotted part at the top will be a flap for hooking the pennants onto your string). It should look like this . . .
3. Now, fold over and make a tight crease to form a flap . . .
4. Take your pennants and start hooking each one over your string or ribbon . . .
5. And Voila! You've got yourself a customized banner that you can easily take a part and store flat for future use. You could temporarily tape the back, but I usually don't have to. The individual pennants stay hooked onto the string just fine!
For the middle part of the pennants, you can either leave plain or create a layered look like I did in the above. I just free-form cut a smaller triangle and used it as a template to cut-out a bunch. I like to mix and match and create a variety of different pennants. But, if you prefer a more uniform look, you could just keep it plain (without the smaller triangles layered on top).
I hope this is helpful. And, please send me pics if you end up making one for your party (or just for decoration!).
Happy Flairing!
